Final Thought: To whoever or whomever released
the virus
strain that was supposed to fix the problem
by getting the patch from Windows Update:
While I think you’re going about things
the wrong way, I commend your efforts. At least
you’re not too likely to face federal
prosecution, though I doubt the Sussex Police
are happy with your endeavors.
The quick background (feel free to skip this
if you want): I’m a sysadmin, techie-type
person. I’m often called a geek, but I
avoid that moniker since I don’t play
first person shooter games and I don’t
chat on IRC or even have an ICQ number. Like
all techies, I have the occasional “work
till 3am” night that often turns into
starting work the next morning with no sleep.
For money, I work as a sysadmin consultant.
I live in Linux and Solaris, and support Windows
environments and Macs when necessary. I’ve
worked for 7 or so different companies in the
last 10 years (layoffs are a killer) and now
consult to 20+ companies. My friends consider
me a Linux and UNIX guru. I am paid to consult
to other companies, to build clusters, to do
disaster recovery, and in short make sure that
the companies I work with and for have the highest
level of uptime. This responsibility goes beyond
just Linux and UNIX, but into Windows, network
equipment of all types, etc. Like many security
experts, I spend time thinking about the “what
if’s” that never come to fruition,
though I personally think the above “what
if” could soon be a reality.
